YWCA Opens New Location to Serve Immigrant and Refugee Community

Categories: Other

The location will provide resources to 875+ Afghan evacuees who relocated to Tulsa in fall 2021.

YWCA Tulsa announced Monday the opening of a new South Tulsa location to provide case management, employment services, and other resources to Tulsa’s immigrant and refugee community, including the more than 875 Afghan evacuees who relocated to Tulsa in fall of 2021. The new office is inside the Riverbridge Office Park at 1323 E 71st Street in Tulsa.

As the Refugee Support Services provider for the eastern half of Oklahoma, YWCA Tulsa is tasked with providing employment placement and support, interpretation and translation services, English language classes, and general support to Afghan families. In the months since evacuees arrived in Tulsa, YWCA has hired 14 new Immigrant and Refugee Services employees, including one new Refugee Program Manager, one Transportation Coordinator, 10 caseworkers and two staff interpreters to fulfill the needs of Afghan families and connect them to vital community resources.

YWCA’s South Tulsa location will supply newcomers with resources close to home and allow the agency the needed space to grow and continue providing its important services to immigrant and refugee families.

“YWCA is excited to expand into South Tulsa, an area where we know many refugee and immigrant families call home,” YWCA Tulsa CEO Julie Davis said. “We know that transportation can be a huge limitation in families receiving YWCA resources, so we are looking forward to providing more access to our services by being closer in proximity to the people we serve.”

YWCA Tulsa is also excited to announce the first English as a Second Language (ESL) course created for Afghan families starting in late August of 2022. The program will feature two courses, one for men and one for women, and will work to eliminate language barriers for evacuee families.

Dates and information for the program will be announced in the coming days. Those interested in the ESL classes should call (918) 858-2412 for more information and to register for the class.

Tulsa welcomed more than 875 Afghan evacuees through the Afghan Placement and Assistance (APA) program in the fall of 2021. Catholic Charities of Eastern Oklahoma assisted with rehoming 800 individuals in the Tulsa area, and B’nai Emunah Synagogue assisted 50 individuals. After the initial rehoming process, YWCA Tulsa has taken the responsibility of connecting families to resources and employment, and helping them acclimate to their new community.
