Meet Laura Bachman, Our new Immigration Program Manager.
Laura is an attorney that represents immigrant clients with their legal immigration matters. Laura loves working for YWCA. “I think our mission of empowering women and eliminating racism is very well in line with providing representation to immigrants in our community who face a lot of those barriers that come with not being fully empowered — and also that goes along with racism,” Laura said.
I interviewed Laura to see how she was enjoying working with us and what she loved most about YWCA. She let me know that our mission and staff are two of the biggest reason why she loves YWCA. I asked her what she hoped to gain while working with us. “I guess I would hope to gain more of the skills necessary to fully implement our mission in my daily work,” Laura said.
We always like to get to know our new employees and learn more about them. While talking with Laura I wondered if there was anything about her that we wouldn’t immediately know. There was! “Well, actually I am a Tae kwon do black belt. I don’t think anyone knows that and if they saw me, I’m all of 5’2’’ and I don’t think they would expect that,” Laura laughs.
A typical day in the life of Laura consist of checking with staff for any questions they might have,  reviewing deadlines that need to go out for client cases, client consultations, and processing other client’s cases. So clearly a very busy woman!
Before YWCA, Laura was previously a consultant for a local law firm here in Tulsa. Then before that she was an attorney with the University of Tulsa Immigration Law Clinic for about six years. During her time there she worked primarily with immigrant victims of crime, persecution and domestic violence. “I’ve been working in private practice and the nonprofit world in immigration law for 20 years now. I love what I do,” Laura said.
I absolutely loved talking to Laura and getting to know more about her and all the work she does for YWCA, as well as our community. To learn more about our immigrant and refugee services, click the link below!
