2018 Los Pecesitos Swim-A-Thon

Los Pecesitos is a scholarshipped swim lesson program for Hispanic/Latino children that addresses racial disparities in the drowning rates for children. Children of color are 2 – 3 times more likely to drown than their Caucasian peers. In some settings and age groups this risk is 10x that of white counterparts. These statistics are compounded by the fact that Oklahoma has the 3rd highest drowning death rate in the country. Los Pecesitos works to overcome barriers parents face including language barriers, cultural barriers and financial barriers by offering the program for free and with bilingual instructors. Since its inception in 2011 1,123 children have completed the 4 week program. This year YWCA has partnered with City of Tulsa to offer satellite locations for our courses with other community groups like the Tulsa Boys Home. This partnership has given us the opportunity to serve 66% more children than we normally do but serve different populations that face disparities.
